History
The Whiskey Smash is a classic cocktail that dates back to the mid-19th century and is closely related to the Mint Julep. The drink first appeared in Jerry Thomas’ 1862 Bartender’s Guide, where it was described as a “Julep on a small plan”. Unlike a traditional Julep, the Smash includes muddled fruit, typically lemon wedges, which give it a bright, citrusy kick. By 1888, bartender Harry Johnson included multiple Smash recipes in his Bartender’s Manual, solidifying its place as a distinct cocktail. The Whiskey Smash remained popular throughout the 19th century, but its presence faded until it was revived in the late 1990s, when muddled lemon were added to enhance its fresh, vibrant profile. Today, the Whiskey Smash is enjoyed as a refreshing, easy-to-make cocktail, perfect for those who want a lighter, fruitier take on whiskey drinks.
