History

The Virgin Margarita is a modern, alcohol-free adaptation of the classic Margarita, a cocktail that has a history that dates back to the 1930s–1950s in the US-Mexico border region. It likely emerged in the late 20th century, as part of the growing demand for mocktails and inclusive drink options. It retains the Margarita’s signature lime-forward, citrus-sweet balance, replacing tequila and triple sec with lime juice, orange juice, syrup, and sparkling water or alcohol-free spirits. Its popularity has surged in the UK and globally due to the rise of low/no alcohol trends, Dry January, and wellness-focused menus.
