History
The Mojito is a classic Cuban cocktail with a rich history. Its origins trace back to Havana, Cuba, though the exact story of its creation is debated. One theory suggests that Sir Francis Drake, the English sea captain, created an early version of the Mojito in the 16th century called “El Draque”. His crew reportedly mixed aguardiente (a precursor to rum), lime, sugar, and mint as a remedy for scurvy and dysentery. Another theory credits La Bodeguita del Medio, a famous Havana bar, with popularizing the modern Mojito. The drink became widely known in the 20th century, particularly due to its association with Ernest Hemingway, who was a regular at the bar. Over time, the Mojito evolved into the refreshing cocktail we know today, made with white rum, lime juice, sugar, mint, and soda water.
