History

The Mint Julep as we know it today likely emerged in the southern United States during the 18th century. It became a symbol of Southern hospitality and was traditionally made with bourbon, sugar, mint, and crushed ice. The drink gained prominence as a refreshing cocktail, especially in the warm climate of the South. By the 19th century, the Mint Julep was associated with elegance and sophistication, often served in silver or pewter cups. It became particularly famous as the official drink of the Kentucky Derby in 1938, cementing its status as a cultural icon.
