History

The Hairy Navel cocktail is a stronger version of the Fuzzy Navel, created in the 1980s when vodka was added to the original mix of peach schnapps and orange juice. The name "Hairy Navel" comes from the idea that adding vodka makes the drink "hairier" or more potent compared to the Fuzzy Navel, which only contains peach schnapps and orange juice. The Fuzzy Navel itself was named in 1984 as part of a marketing campaign for De Kuyper Peachtree Schnapps, with "fuzzy" referring to peach fuzz and "navel" to the type of orange used. Given the rise of vodka in the 1980s, it was only a matter of time before bartenders started adding it to the mix, creating the Hairy Navel.
