History
The Christmas Spiced Rum Sour is a modern seasonal riff on the classic Rum Sour, which itself dates back to the mid-1800s. The original Rum Sour, made with rum, citrus, and sugar, was popularized by sailors in the Caribbean and the British Royal Navy as a way to balance strong spirits with citrus to prevent scurvy. The Christmas variant builds on this foundation by swapping standard rum for spiced rum, often infused with cinnamon, clove, vanilla, and orange peel. This festive twist likely emerged from the broader trend of holiday cocktail adaptations, where bartenders began incorporating warming spices and seasonal garnishes into classic templates like sours, old fashioneds, and flips. While not a historic cocktail in its own right, the Christmas Spiced Rum Sour has gained popularity in recent years as a cozy, citrus-bright alternative to heavier holiday drinks like eggnog or mulled wine. It’s now a staple on winter menus and home cocktail lists, especially in the UK and US.
