History

The Americano was first served in the 1860s at Gaspare Campari’s bar in Milan, Italy, it is a variant of the Milano-Torino, which was named after it’s two main ingredients Campari from Milan, and sweet vermouth from Turin. It gained popularity among American tourists visiting Italy during the Prohibition era which led to it being renamed the Americano. Over time, it became a staple apéritif, known for its bittersweet and refreshing profile, thanks to the addition of soda water. The Americano also holds a special place in pop culture, it was the first cocktail ordered by James Bond in Ian Fleming’s novel Casino Royale.
